Housing Continues to be the UK Achilles Heel

UK residents continue to have difficulty obtaining lending for mortgage loans.  Even with the falling home prices, the market remains so tight with lending criteria, banks are still hesitant to lend to even the lowest of risk possibilities.

Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, commented on housing being one of the biggest problems facing the UK.  He held a question and answer session yesterday with news station MSN.  Clegg was quoted saying: “Affordable housing had become one of the biggest long-term problems that we face as a country.”

A report which was published this past weekend by the Chartered Institute of Housing said: “The golden age of ownership “ here in the UK was over.  Clegg also commented: “I find it heartbreaking when I see young families in my constituency not being able to afford their own home.”

He informed the audience which was gathered there at the news station's facilities, that the government was going to make a number of announcements about owning a home and housing becoming more affordable.

“One of the things that we are doing is dramatically decentralizing power, making it easier for local communities to decide for themselves where they want new homes,” he said.  He also made offensive comments regarding the current council housing financial system for preventing councils from building new affordable homes.

Clegg also remarked on the current status of UK’s nuclear deterrent, saying: “It is going to be difficult for someone who is going to receive less housing benefit because of the changes we are introducing to understand why at the time we should spend huge sums of money in a hurry on replacing Trident in full.”
