UK Housing Starts Surge in Fourth Quarter

New housing starts within the UK housing market is sitting in a pivotal position. With an election looming just months in the future, the second half of the year is up in the air in relation to the number of houses which could be built, according to many housing insiders. The housing market itself slowed down in the middle of last year and has not bounced back since.

Fewer mortgage approvals due to tighter lending rules and a slowdown in the increase of house prices are two areas which have been predominant issues overall. Last year marked a significant piece of data for housing starts. It marked the highest number of new homes registered to be built since the year 2007.

The National House Building Council indicates more than 145,000 houses and apartments were registered to be built last year. The last quarter of the year became a point of optimism with a strong surge in the number of houses registered to be built.

John Tutte, chief of Redrow home builder, commented on the impact the general election will have on the coming months of home building, saying: "It's going to be around that mark. We were surprised by the Q4 numbers, and we could be surprised again.”

The general election is proving to be one of skepticism. Conflicting opinions on a number of issues continues to be at the center of debate. The UK housing market could go through a wide range of changes depending on the party dropped into power.

Overall, the housing market continues to be a bit subdued relative to the amount of activity, yet there are still a number of attractive deals available for both original loans and remortgages from a number of lenders.
