UK Families Adjusting to new Truths within Housing Market
UK families continue to familiarize themselves with the new truths which preside within the UK housing market. These truths include putting a hold on forming a family in lieu of dealing with the housing issues which are challenging but not impossible to overcome. About 20% of the 31 to 44 age group feel they must deal with the high cost of not only property, but the cost of dealing with a lender, before they can proceed with building a family.
High house prices, unreasonable arrangement fees, and unusually high expectations from borrowers have affected the opinions of what it truly takes to reach the first step on the property ladder. The last few months have been especially difficult for first timers, as lending criteria seems tougher than ever and rental cost continues to go up.
As difficult the conditions seem for first timers and others wanting to move home, there is great reward for those who are able to meet the challenging demands of lenders and the application process. According to Halifax, mortgage payments are at an affordability level not seen in 15 years.
Kay Boycott, director of communications, policy and campaigns at Shelter, commented on the conditions facing many today in the housing market, saying: “It's heartbreaking that so many people are being forced to put their lives on hold in this way.
“Sadly, more and more couples are finding that despite working hard and saving hard, they're still priced out of a stable and affordable home, trapped in rented housing where landlords can evict them or raise the rent at any time.”
Even with the overwhelming challenges facing property hunters today, opportunities exist for those able to meet the strict demands of the housing market.
