Research Indicates Many Believe House Ownership Out of Reach
The most recent UK housing market research indicates house ownership for many could become a passing thought. House prices continue to skyrocket as income levels are struggling to keep pace. The shortage of available housing for purchase is also making it quite difficult for many aspiring to purchase a home to do so.
The study revealed more than 10% of the 2,000 people who are not ever expecting to own a home prefer to rent. This number was dwarfed by the large number who claimed high cost was a major barrier to house ownership.
Less than 50% of families who currently own a house believe they will never enjoy the freedom which comes with house ownership. Those families do not see themselves ever reaching the first rung on the property ladder.
Only 32% of those involved with the study believe they will surely own property someday. Middle class families simply do not see themselves as being able to afford a house in their lifetime.
Matthew Whittaker, chief economist at the Resolution Foundation, believes the problems facing the housing market are chronic and will likely take years to rectify.
Whittaker commented on the typical outlook displayed by most working adults, saying: "It used to be that if you went out to work and did the right thing, you would expect that relatively quickly over the course of your career you would be buying a house, you’d go on holiday every year, you'd save for a pension.
"But those big ticket items have really started to change, not just for lower earners, but for middle income Britain as well.”
