Prime Minister May Takes Aim at Housing Shortage in Speech
The UK housing shortage has been on the government solutions board for some time and Monday will see more done to increase the chances the problem does not become a crisis. Prime Minister Theresa May is delivering a speech targeting issues within the UK housing market with the shortage as one of the hot topics. She plans to take aim specifically at the amount of house building which is currently taking place each year and what can be done to improve the overall number of residences which are completed.
Housing shortage is a real problem for anyone in search of a fresh place to call home, according to figures from multiple sources starting years ago. The problem is now more than just a problem, but sitting close to crisis level, according to some housing authorities. By the year 2020, the shortage could be so bad that residents will simply run out of flats to consider as a move home.
May’s speech on Monday aims at new plans to inject more building figures into the number of homes currently being completed. An overhaul of planning rules is expected to be announced as a new spark in the process to build more residences.
In a recent interview, May commented on the commitment of the government to ensure more housing is completed, saying: "We're saying to councils you've got to take local communities into account, you've got to ensure you've got a proper plan for your local area. If you haven't got it the government will intervene."
Some close to the housing market are calling the new government stipulations a housing revolution.
