Oldest Home in Britain Discovered
Britain has just uncovered a rare find. Archaeologists have uncovered a home in Scarsborough, North Yorkshire that is being dated as having been built in 8,500 BC. This discovery is much older than the previous oldest house.
The structure is circular and is providing valuable clues of early life in the British area. The find is 500 years older than the once oldest home, which was located in Howick, Northhumberland and is called by archeologists as a "sensational discovery". Along with the home is a wooden platform that is being called the oldest example of carpentry work in all of Europe. The archaeology teams are from the universities of Manchester and York. Dr. Nicky Milner of University of York said: "What’s really important is how it changes our view of hunter gathers." "There was a view of them as being very nomadic, highly mobile people, but now we’re seeing them as much more settled and sophisticated. People were living in the same places for generations. This is a sensational discovery and tells us so much about the people who lived at this time," Dr. Milner added. The home would have dated back to when Britain was attached to continental Europe. The people living there would have been settling in the area after the glaciers of the ice age were retreating. The home was circular with a sunken circular floor and timber posts around the sides. It is unknown what the floor or roof consisted of or was covered with. Archaeologists believe the house would have been rebuilt over time which means the people stayed in one place versus moving frequently. The Star Carr site was inhabited for 200-500 years. The area was discovered in the 1940's and has resulted in numerous finds but the home is one of the best for archaeologists. Another interesting find was an 11,000 year old tree trunk with its bark still intact. Universities Minister David Willetts responded to the find saying: "This exciting discovery marries world-class research with the lives of our ancestors. It brings out the similarities and differences between modern life and the ancient past in a fascinating way, and will change our perceptions for ever."
