House Prices in Britain Could Be Impacted by Japan Nuclear Disaster

The nuclear disaster in Japan could very well have an impact on the house prices in Britain. Time has marched on for many years without any nuclear energy plant problems. Chernobyl and Three Mile Island have faded into the back of the mind for many that go looking for a home and find one near a nuclear energy plant. The longer time faded the safer the decision to buy near a plant, but now things have changed.

There are 10 nuclear energy plants in Britain with 19 reactors working. There are plans in the works to bring more. Now the safety of nuclear energy and the efficiency of safety backups will be in question in the aftermath of the nuclear problems in Japan. This will have an effect on homeowners considering a purchase and therefore house prices and home values in a general area around a nuclear facility.

It is estimated that there will be an impact on house purchases within a large area of the nuclear energy plants. It will encompass not only the general area of the plant, but the areas that would be evacuated in the event of an emergency. These are of course concerns that will have to be addressed by government, community, and the energy companies to bring trust to those choosing to live near the plants.

Now eyes will be on the areas around the nuclear plants. Home buyers may be more willing to trust nuclear plants in areas that are not earthquake or tsunami prone. Yet, there is the possibility that house sales will suffer due to the recent events in Japan and sellers.
